Pathway overview
The Wound Management Pathway aims to expand students knowledge and skills required in the assessment, management and prevention of wounds in a primary health care environment including community-based, educational, occupational and informal settings and in general practice.
The Wound Management Pathway aims to expand students knowledge and skills required to identify wound types and apply appropriate dressings to support wound healing in a primary health care environment.
Upon successful completion of the pathway, students should have the skills and knowledge to enable them to:
- Accurately identify wound types
- Apply appropriate wound assessment methods to clinical practice
- Identify chronic wound features and associated clinical features including interpretation of wound terminology
- Identify and perform appropriate wound cleansing and debridement methods
- Obtain a compliant wound swab culture using best practice methods
- Make informed appropriate choices of wound dressings based on accurate wound assessment
- Use appropriate documentation and report writing methods to provide patient education, and consistent and ongoing care.

To achieve competency in this pathway, students must successfully complete:
- Realistic skills simulations
- Written assessment covering essential knowledge and skills
- Workplace observed practice.
Workplace observed practice is a mandatory requirement for this course, however, students have the option of completing this in a simulated environment in the workshop if it can't be completed in the workplace.

This learning pathway for students covers Foundations and Advanced Principles of wound assessment and care, identifying appropriate wound treatment and best practice for compliance in wound swab culture. This course bundle enables clinical documentation and report writing with a guide to deliver patient education for continued care and chronic wound prevention.
The face-to-face workshop will explore a range of complex case studies, treatment options and dressing applications, and a range of practical skills. The case studies focus on the delivery of a holistic approach to treating wounds, and provides clinical guidance on the decision-making process for selecting optimal treatment plans.
Students enrolled in Benchmarque Group courses should adhere to the following principles:
- Display a commitment to learning and to achieving success
- Be responsible and accountable for their own learning, behaviour and decisions
- Actively participate in all workshop activities and learning experiences
- Attend all scheduled sessions and be punctual at all times
- Complete all online assessments and workplace practice activities
- Work in harmony and respect the rights and opinions of staff and other students
- Treat others as they themselves would like to be treated
- Use acceptable language at all times.
Key Information
As a general guide, one hour of active learning equates to one hour of CPD. It is the responsibility of the individual student to calculate how many hours of active learning have been completed. The hours of active learning estimated above should act as a guide to CPD hours.

The Wound Management Pathway requires you to complete a face-to-face workshop. Below are the current available workshop dates, which you will be able to select once you have completed the online component. It’s handy to note though, once you click ‘Apply Now’ you can start the online learning now even if there is not a workshop date that suits you. The 'Apply Now' button will take you to accessIQ, our online learning and assessment platform. Simply log in using your existing details or create a new account, and then follow the prompts to enrol.

Continuing professional development is the means by which members of the clinical profession maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives.
The CPD cycle involves reviewing practice, identifying learning needs, planning and participating in relevant learning activities, and reflecting on the value of those activities.
We approximate that the Wound Management: Foundations and Principles will take 30 hours.
We approximate that the Wound Management: Advanced Practice will take 8 hours.
As a general guide, one hour of active learning equates to one hour of CPD. It is the responsibility of the individual student to calculate how many hours of active learning have been completed. The hours of active learning estimated above should act as a guide to CPD hours.
12 months. The time is calculated from when a student receives and opens their assessment. Within the accessIQ platform, students will be provided an initial 6 months to complete and submit all required assessment activities. Friendly email reminders will be sent to students to ensure an assessment is completed on time. At the completion of the 6 month period, students can request up to a maximum of 2 extensions, each extension being for a period of 90 days. If requesting a second extension, the request must be in writing.
If the entire 12 month period expires and a final assessment has not been submitted, The Benchmarque Group reserves the right to deem the assessment Not Competent and remove the student from the program.

If you are deemed Not Yet Competent on your first and second assessment submissions, feedback will be provided. It is very important that you read all the feedback provided. The Assessor will have identified any areas where additional evidence is required or any questions that need to be reviewed and resubmitted. If, after 3 unsuccessful submissions, you are unable to demonstrate competency on your assessment, your assessment will be deemed Not Competent. Feedback will be provided to you and what the possible following steps and outcomes are.
At the completion of the program, successful students will receive a Statement of Attainment for HLTENN039 - Apply principles of wound management. A Statement of Attainment is issued when an individual has completed one or more accredited units.
No, you can complete Wound Management: Foundations and Principles on its own (for $95.00). However, to participate in the Wound Management: Advanced Practice workshop, you MUST ALSO enrol in Wound Management: Foundations and Principles as a co-requisite.
