The course provides an overview of lower limb assessment processes and treatment options, including cost-effective dressing options for common wounds on the lower limbs.

You will review your current knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic, vascular, arterial, and integumentary systems. You will apply current evidence-based assessment methods and treatments to your current practice. You will use an allied health team approach to collate patient history, results, and data from which you can form an effective treatment plan.
You will cover knowledge of wounds on lower limbs associated with conditions often seen in primary health, aged care, palliative care, and acute care settings. These conditions include lower limb health complications associated with chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Osteomyelitis, Lymphoedema, Osteoporosis, Arthritis, and Nutrition related disorders.
The ‘Wound Dressings’ chapter will feature infographics containing assessment summaries and best practice dressing guidelines.
Lower Limb Health assessment including:
- Chronic health conditions and commonly related lower limb wounds
- Perform range of movement/mobility assessment
- Urine analysis
- Blood analysis
- Assessment tools and clinical scales
- Wound assessment
- Wound Management and dressings.
At the end of the course, you will have started or refreshed your learning on how to:
- Use clinical assessment outcomes to determine appropriate treatment options for each lower limb condition.
- Use evidence-based practice methods inclusive of correct wound swab technique, aseptic technique, and adoption of antibiotic stewardship protocols.
- Apply effective dressings to wound management practice that enable patients’ comfort, prolonged wear, durability, greater healing capacity and a better quality of life.
- Provide education to patients that will support them in their self-care and that will promote further self-awareness of their health process.
- Provide education to patient families and support network to further facilitate patient independence.
- Utilise clinical assessment results and establish referral partnerships.
