This course is part of the Wound Management Pathway. This course is a co-requisite, meaning you can complete it before or after you complete the Wound Management: Advanced Practice workshop which consists of online learning, workshop and workplace activities.

The Wound Management: Foundations and Principles course enables healthcare professionals to develop foundational knowledge and skills required to assess, manage and prevent wounds in primary healthcare.
The course provides management strategies and an understanding of referral pathways for specialist care in relation to a range of conditions.
Content for the Wound Management: Foundations and Principles course includes:
- Principles of wound management
- Structure of the skin
- Wound assessment
- Implementing wound care strategies
- Evaluation of wound healing.
On the successful completion of the course, students should have the ability to:
- Assess, manage and apply a variety of wound management techniques to a broad range of clients in the primary health care setting
- Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of wound management products and materials and the techniques to apply the appropriate product
- Apply a broad knowledge of management strategies, client centred education and provision of basic care and advice in relation to wound management
- Assess the need for and perform wound management in a variety of settings, as well as educating and assisting in the management of clients.

To achieve competency students must demonstrate successful completion of:
- Written assessment covering essential knowledge and skills
- Workplace observed practice.
Workplace-observed practice is a mandatory requirement for this course, workplace practice must be observed by a peer or suitably qualified clinician.

Develop an understanding of wound types, how to assess and manage wounds resulting from different injury or disease conditions. The skill of assessment, evaluation and treatment of wounds comes from the understanding of wound healing and the materials, products and techniques available to establish the right wound care strategy. This accredited learning creates an ability to build wound care knowledge, considerations for specialist support in strategic care, undertake practical workplace activities, and apply basic principles around wound treatment.

Continuing professional development is the means by which members of the clinical profession maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives.
The CPD cycle involves reviewing practice, identifying learning needs, planning and participating in relevant learning activities, and reflecting on the value of those activities.
As a general guide, one hour of active learning equates to one hour of CPD. It is the responsibility of the individual student to calculate how many hours of active learning have been completed. The hours of active learning estimated above should act as a guide to CPD hours.
12 months. The time is calculated from when a student receives and opens their assessment. Within the accessIQ platform, students will be provided an initial 6 months to complete and submit all required assessment activities. Friendly email reminders will be sent to students to ensure an assessment is completed on time. At the completion of the 6 month period, students can request up to a maximum of 2 extensions, each extension being for a period of 90 days. If requesting a second extension, the request must be in writing.
If the entire 12 month period expires and a final assessment has not been submitted, The Benchmarque Group reserves the right to deem the assessment Not Competent and remove the student from the program.

If you are deemed Not Yet Competent on your first and second assessment submissions, feedback will be provided. It is very important that you read all the feedback provided. The Assessor will have identified any areas where additional evidence is required or any questions that need to be reviewed and resubmitted. If, after 3 unsuccessful submissions, you are unable to demonstrate competency on your assessment, your assessment will be deemed Not Competent. Feedback will be provided to you and what the possible following steps and outcomes are.
At the completion of the program, successful students will receive a Statement of Attainment for Wound Management: Foundations and Principles program. A Statement of Attainment is issued when an individual has completed one or more accredited units.
