Course Summary
“One of the biggest challenges that primary care practitioners face is helping people change longstanding behaviours that pose significant health risks.” RACGP
The Motivational Interviewing (MI) program designed and delivered by Benchmarque Group explores current understanding regarding how and why people change, and the potential role of MI in facilitating behaviour change in the general practice setting.
MI establishes a supportive relationship between the healthcare professional and the client with the goal of helping the client develop a positive attitude towards change. In this way, the client feels empowered to take positive actions in addressing their own health outcomes.

Course Details
The course targets people working in the primary healthcare sector and can include a blend of clinical and non-clinical roles.
Motivational interviewing is underpinned by a series of principles that emphasise a collaborative relationship in which the autonomy of the patient is respected and uses the patient's intrinsic resources for change. The health professional adopts a non-confrontational approach to guide the patient toward change.
This practice can be helpful in a variety of healthcare applications including nutrition, exercise, medication adherence, prevention programs associated with chronic disease, pain management, mental health, substance abuse and settings where an inclusive approach is required for individuals at risk.
The course designed and delivered by the Benchmarque Group is facilitated by an accredited MINT trainer and includes the following learning objectives:
- Explore how and why people change, and the role of motivational interviewing in facilitating behaviour change in the general practice setting.
- Develop fluency with the core principles and processes of Motivational Interviewing
- Develop and apply key interpersonal and communication skills that underpin Motivational Interviewing.
- Practical application of skills and knowledge – building specific practice exercises to recognise and respond to challenging healthcare clients in your setting.
- Understand the importance of self-care for those working in primary healthcare.
Throughout this course, the learner will explore practical strategies to help people find their own motivation and commitment to change.
eLearning Module
The e-learning module is designed as a pre-learning activity that prepares participants with the MI framework and change methodology. It is reflection based rather than assessment based, giving the individuals some level of confidence stepping into the practical workshop.
One (1) Day in-person workshop
The workshop is focused on building the necessary skill that underpin the MI framework and then works on specific case studies relevant in the primary healthcare setting.
Virtual Consolidation Workshop
The virtual consolidation workshop is designed to provide follow up support for participants to ask questions or focus on a challenging situation and consolidate application of skills in the workplace.
During the eLearning module, students will have an opportunity to reflect and document thoughts on practical activities.
Within the face-to-face workshop students will participate in case studies, scenarios and role-plays.
There is no formal assessment associated with this course.
