Course overview

The Course in Wound Closure develops the knowledge and skills required for Nurses, GPs and relevant Allied Healthcare Workers to safely assess the need for, and perform, wound closure in a variety of settings.

Course outline

As part of this two-day course, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of wound closure and suturing methods and learn the unique benefits and limitations of each wound closure and suturing technique that must be considered in each individual case.

Students are equipped with a Limbs and Things Suture Tutor Plus Hands-on Kit at each face-to-face workshop. The kit contains skin pads, knot tying kit, and a range of equipment used to explore different wound closure techniques. This kit is for students to take home to help reinforce knowledge and support transition into practice.

Learning outcomes

At the successful completion of the Course in Wound Closure, students will have the knowledge and skills to determine the best wound closure technique for each situation to achieve durability and simplicity.

Students will develop the ability to close wounds using a variety of methods and materials including sutures, skin staples, tissue adhesive and adhesive strips.

Delivery
  • Two-day face-to-face workshop
  • In-class activities assessed by a qualified assessor
  • A mandatory observed workplace activity

Assessments

To achieve competency in this course, students must:

  • Competently complete an assessment covering essential knowledge and skills
  • Demonstrate competency through a series of continuous practical skills assessments throughout the duration of the course, including the demonstration of various wound closure techniques.
Expectations

The study days are primarily skills based with only a half day of lecture on day one, from this point it’s all practical.

The practical elements will include the demonstration and practice of various suturing techniques, use of tissue glue and staples to close wounds.

Each student is provided with their own set of suturing and wound closure resources for use during the course.

Simulated wound closure is performed using pig trotters and chicken thighs to simulate human tissue. The trainer is there to guide and help you develop your technique and will be constantly checking your work and assessing your technique during each session.

Morning tea and lunch are provided both days.

This was a great course
The workshop was excellent with lots of learning and practical time to really get our techniques going. My GP was very impressed with how quickly I picked up the suturing and I put this all down to the training. Great course.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Will this course enable me to perform wound closure in my workplace?

Yes, suturing and wound closure can be added to your scope of practice, as long as certain conditions are met. You must be qualified (have competently completed the Benchmarque Group or similar accredited course) and you must be authorised (a policy or procedure stating the conditions that need to be met for you to perform wound closure in each workplace that you are employed in, as these conditions may differ from city to rural or remote location with regard to autonomy). If these criteria are met, then you can safely perform wound closure.

What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

Continuing professional development is the means by which members of the clinical profession maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives.

The CPD cycle involves reviewing practice, identifying learning needs, planning and participating in relevant learning activities, and reflecting on the value of those activities.

How many CPD hours will I achieve for completing this program?

As a general guide, one hour of active learning equates to one hour of CPD. It is the responsibility of the individual student to calculate how many hours of active learning have been completed. The hours of active learning estimated above should act as a guide to CPD hours.

For all other health professionals completing this program, your continuing professional development (CPD) requirements may vary and it is important to remember that it is your responsibility to maintain and register CPD with your professional body. In many instances, your regulatory authority will recognise hours of learning as stated above.

How long do I have to complete the assessment?

12 Months. The time is calculated from when a student is provided with online access to their assessment. Within the BenchmarqueIQ platform, students will be provided an initial 12 months to complete and submit all required assessment activities. Friendly email reminders will be sent to students to ensure an assessment is completed on time. At the completion of the 6 month period, students can request up to a maximum of 2 extensions, each extension being for a period of 90 days. If requesting a second extension, the request must be in writing.

What if I cannot complete the assessment in the allocated time?

If the entire 12 month period expires and a final assessment has not been submitted, The Benchmarque Group reserves the right to deem the assessment Not Competent and remove the student from the program.

How many times can I submit my assessment?

If you are deemed Not Yet Competent on your first and second assessment submissions, feedback will be provided. It is very important that you read all the feedback provided. The Assessor will have identified any areas where additional evidence is required or any questions that need to be reviewed and resubmitted. If, after 3 unsuccessful submissions, you are unable to demonstrate competency on your assessment, your assessment will be deemed Not Competent. Feedback will be provided to you and what the possible following steps and outcomes are.

What do I receive at the completion of the program?

At the completion of the program, successful students will receive a Statement of Attainment for the Course in Wound Closure (Course Code 10762NAT). A Statement of Attainment is issued when an individual has completed one or more accredited units.
